[IBU] sabco/kegs.com False Bottom

I have used the smaller stainless steel false bottom that sits on the
bottom of the keg. It works great for filtering out whole hops. I can
get away with some whole and some pellet, but I don't think it would do
well with all pellet hops.
I was having trouble with high terminal gravities and changed several
things at once ( I know, good scientific practice says to change one
variable at a time), so it is hard to tell what has made the difference.
The false bottom tends to collect trub on the bottom side and I think
the wort in the bottom does not circulate as well as it should. I
suspected that the false bottom was causing more sugars to be
caramelized under the screen, thus not allowing them to be fermented.
I have made several beers lately in a different vessel that does not
have a false bottom ( I use a 1/2" standpipe with a bottom outlet with
good results). I have also switched malts and have been doing a low
sach rest ~146-148. The last few beers have had terminal gravities
~1.012. Previous beers yielded gravities ~1.020.
I think the Sabco false bottom is the hinged type that I use in my
lauter tun. I'm guessing this would work better than the one I used in
my boil kettle since there is more area under the screen. Either way,
you will need to retain the screen as the boiling action likes to push
it up. I used a hose clamp attached to the outlet tube just above the
screen. I think Sabus drops in a chunk of stainless to hold it down.
I'd say go for it. Let me know how it turns out and if your TGs change
at all.
Cheers!

Is anyone using Sabco's 15" false bottom in the boil kettle to filter
out hops? I'm particularly curious to see if it filters out pellet
hops.
Thx for the info
