We went to visit my younger brother who recently relocated to Omaha Nebraska (Papillion, NE). During my visit and trip to the local HyVee I realized we are deficient in many wonderful beers. That is, their local HyVee with adjacent liquor store was immense. It was probably about 4x the size of our Regal Liquors in WDM. Variety was overwhelming. No issues w/ high gravity beers. Pricing was appropriate. I grabbed some 2008 Bigfoot, some Boulevard smokestack varieties and some hackish bottle of New Belgium La Folie. Aside from nearly all the children in the Omaha vicinity trying to purchase these high gravity beers, it was a wonderful store. Actually my point is, there were no kids in sight. It was easy to chat it up w/ the manager and several individuals there to purchase gourmet beers without a thought to our silly ass Iowa law. I was tempted to take a decent video and make sure that is available for our locale elected officials. They need to see the places that sell high proof beer!
Perhaps that is an angle we need? Visit these stores outside of Iowa and get demonstration of the business they bring in? Congregate with those consumers. Ask about underage buying (does it happen?) and get overall proof that gourmet beers are really a strong market. A video could easily demonstrate these liquor stores cater to a "higher" clientele besides the kids buying natty light for their parties. A couple of fathers/mothers pushing grocery carts along with children through this store. This was not a shanty place. Perhaps interview managers of these establishments (if they are willing). The manager of the place I visited was very open with our discussion. Hate to beat a dead horse but I suspect the time is now to start planning for next year's session.
Bye the way, my brother goes by this liquor store daily and would be willing to obtain a couple bottles if paid upfront. La Folie was surprisingly in stock and was $18/bottle (750ml). Bigfoot was $11/6pack.
