[IBU] Beerfest

I might as well chime in now to echo Brian's sentiment and also say that
we were at Brewfest by the good graces of Jeff Bruning. He is a big fan
of homebrew and homebrewers. He took the time to come to our IBU
meeting and he invited us to Brewfest. Jeff was thrilled with the beers
he sampled at the club meeting. As homebrewers we just do what we do;
make beer. Not all beer is great but fortunately the knowledge and
skill to brew great beer has been percolating through our club since it
was formed. I encourage you all to share your wisdom and expertise; to
propagate the ability to make great beer and to push the limits of
understanding. Homebrewers have the ability to effect the craft brewing
industry in a very real and positive way that is unparalleled by any
other hobby. You wont see model railroad enthusiasts inspiring changes
in the railroad industry the way homebrewers have changed the craft
brewing industry. Perhaps our club's presence at Brewfest will have a
lasting impact on the breweries and their patrons who attended. I hope
so and I think Jeff Bruning would agree. Cheers!
Steve Becker

The Brewfest was quite awesome really. For those who could not attend,
the IBU tent was next to Worth Brewing which was next to Sutcliff Mead
which was next to Old Main etc etc. In effect, the IBU club was able to
showcase their stuff along side some of the best in the business (Sierra
Nevada and Guinness and Bell's and Boulevard etc). For myself, I was
grateful for this opportunity and props to the organizers.
I was quite surprised by the crowd responses. A few were hesitant but
others would "jump right in." Many were rather surprised at the quality
that was provided by our brewers. We provided a great selection of
unique and inspiring beers. In fact, several individuals commented that
(we) had the best beer at the Brewfest! Many were confused as to where
and how they could purchase our beers! This was a GREAT event for our
club and our brewers.
For myself, I will plan to do this again next year if the opportunity is
granted. My Imperial IPA will be much bigger and more hoppy than this
years! I wonder how many beers we can put on tap? Can you imagine the
IBU tent with 12 different beers coming out of a nice tap wall? Or
jockey box?
20 beers? What a way to showcase our IBU beers to all of Des Moines!
Cheers!
BTW - I was at a little run down liquor store in Sioux Falls SD a couple
weekends ago. I noticed the lineup of Sierra Nevada products in the
cooler and the cost was $8/six. Well, I noticed a six pack or two of
Bigfoot along w/ the others.... Not too bad, a Sixer of Bigfoot for
$8.....

Just wanted to let everyone know that we had a great turnout at Beerfest
with a lot of people stopping by. I had to leave a bit early, so sorry
I wasn't there to help clean up! Big thanks to Steve, John, Lauri,
Matt, Adam and the two Brians for bringing the great beer!
Also, since we handed out a fair number of "business cards" with our web
address on it, I thought I should get a blurb up about the mailing list.
If you go to www.iowabrewersunion.org now, you'll see a link to the
mailing list archives/subscription page.
And while I'm thinking about it, we were thinking that maybe the club
could pay for a jockey box that we could use at events like this, and
members could use when they have special occasions, like weddings, etc.
Not sure if we should buy one flat-out or pay for the parts and build
one ourselves, but something worth considering for the next meeting.
(Personally, I think one with at least four taps would be nice, with
some sort of classy wooden bar-type wrap around it.)
Catch y'all later!
Mike
